ABOUT NECSEM

NECSEM is a member chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology. The society promotes the research, study, and performance of music in all historical periods and cultural contexts. The activities of the chapter are designed to provide a forum for the discussion of current scholarly research and to promote and develop the multitude of traditional art forms found in the communities of the northeast and around the world.

Ethnomusicology is the study of music in its cultural context. It is an interdisciplinary field that examines how music is used in social and cultural activities. Through our organization, we strive to provide an understanding of the many ways music is used and experienced by people around the world.

We strive to bring together students, scholars, musicians and all those interested in the world of ethnomusicology to share, learn and celebrate the power of music. Through our conferences, workshops, and other events, we aim to explore the fascinating and complex relationships between music and culture.
